Have you gained weight or lost a significant amount of weight recently? Are you pregnant? If so, you may notice that your skin has reddish purple streaks near your hips, thighs or breasts. These marks are called stretch marks because it appears that the skin has been stretched.

These marks are actually very common. In fact, over 50% of all men and women will develop these marks at some point in their lives. Depending on your skin coloring and genes, you may experience quite a lot of these marks. In other cases, you may not.

There are a number of products available commercially which claim to reduce the appearance of these marks. Of course, over time, the marks will probably fade on their own. Eventually, you will notice silver-gray lines in place of the purple red marks you see now. Creams can help to cover over the lines and reduce the appearance of these lines. Some products of course are more effective than others.

However, your marks may still be quite noticeable even after using these products. Again, the results you achieve from using creams and other products will depend upon the severity of your scarring as well as your skin tone and your genetics. If you experience several pregnancies, you may develop new marks during each pregnancy or you may only experience the marks during your first.

Many people find that they are able to get used to having these scars. If you are not one of these people, you may be wondering about plastic surgery for stretch mark removal. Depending upon how old your scars are, the number of scars and their location, the removal procedure may be different.

If you want to have an individual scar removed, a doctor may be able to surgically remove the scar from the top layer of the skin. In this case, you will still have a scar, but it will be from the surgery and it will be much smaller than your other scar in most cases.

If you have many scars, you may be able to utilize laser surgery to effectively remove the scarring. Laser surgery is by far the most preferred way to remove the scars and has very few side effects. If you have scars on your stomach along with some excess skin from a pregnancy, your doctor may actually recommend a tummy tuck to remove both the scars and the excess skin. Be sure to discuss with your doctor if you plan another pregnancy before committing to such a procedure.

How much will your plastic surgery for stretch mark removal procedure cost? This can vary depending upon the procedure or even upon where you live. Such surgeries can cost more in certain areas of the country than in other areas. Because of this, you may want to interview several plastic surgeons before choosing one for your procedure. In addition to asking about cost, make sure that your surgeon is experienced in removing scars.

Then, make sure that your surgeon is licensed. You may also want to ask for recommendations from former patients or see pictures of surgery results if possible.
